31 billion containers a year.
One deadline. One chance to get it right.

The UK's Deposit Return Scheme goes live 1 October 2027. Exchange for Change confirmed in June 2026 that RVM operators earn 5p per container returned (Tier 1) and manual collection points earn 3p. At 1,000 returns a day, that is over £18,000 a year before the £6,000 small retailer grant.

Exchange for Change

The UK Deposit Return Scheme, explained.

From 1 October 2027, every drink sold in a PET bottle or metal can across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland carries a 20p refundable deposit. Here's everything retailers, councils and businesses need to know — and why now is the moment to act.

How It Works

A simple loop with a
transformative impact.

Step 01
Purchase with 20p deposit
Every in-scope container (PET, aluminium, steel 150ml–3L) is sold with a 20p refundable deposit added to the price.
Step 02
Return to an RVM or collection point
Consumer brings the empty container to a Retearn RVM or authorised manual return point at a participating retailer.
Step 03
AI verifies in under 20ms
Our AI engine scans the barcode against the Exchange for Change article list in under 20 milliseconds. Valid containers accepted instantly.
Step 04
Instant 20p refund + retailer fee
Consumer gets their deposit back as cash, voucher, or digital payment. The retailer earns a handling fee from Exchange for Change on every return.

Why retailers are choosing Retearn for UK DRS.

Purpose-built hardware, proven in live DRS deployments, backed by an engineering team that has operated a full scheme from day one.

AI identification in under 20ms
Our recognition engine classifies PET, aluminium, glass and multi-layer containers faster than any comparable device. Fewer rejections means more accepted returns and more handling fee income per day.
No compaction — less downtime, better recyclate
We do not compact containers. No crusher means no crush failures, no contamination, and container integrity preserved for higher downstream recyclate value.
Modular hardware — upgrade without replacing
Swap the AI module, expand bin capacity, or change the inlet configuration without replacing the whole machine. Lower five-year total cost of ownership.
Remote monitoring on every device
Every machine reports in real time. Issues are flagged before they cause outages. Bag fill levels, connection status, rejection rates — all visible remotely so site visits happen on schedule.
Configurable to your store and brand
Machine wrap, display language, inlet type, loyalty and POS integration — all configurable. Our hardware adapts to your store format, not the other way around.
Local support, agreed SLA
On-site response times defined at contract stage. Our team is reachable, our service SLA is committed in writing, and our support covers the full deployment lifecycle.
Confirmed Details

What's been confirmed so far.

20p flat deposit — confirmed April 2026
Exchange for Change confirmed a flat 20p deposit on all in-scope containers. Applies to every eligible container from 1 October 2027 across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Return-to-retail model
Retailers are the primary return point network. Urban stores under 100m² are automatically exempt — but can volunteer to participate and earn handling fees.
Scope: PET, aluminium and steel
In-scope: PET plastic, aluminium and steel containers 150ml–3L. Glass excluded in England, Scotland and NI. Wales includes glass with a 4-year phased exemption.
£6,000 grant for small retailers
Eligible small independent retailers can receive £6,000 per site (three annual £2,000 payments) from the £60m fund — separate from and in addition to per-container handling fee income.
Permitted Development Rights
From April 2026, retailers can install RVMs without full planning permission — subject to footprint under 80m², height under 4m, and location restrictions.
EU mandate: 13 more countries
EU PPWR law mandates 90% collection across all 27 member states by 2029. France, Spain, Italy and Greece are among 13 new countries building DRS infrastructure now.
FAQ

Common questions about UK DRS.

Urban stores with retail space under 100m² are automatically exempt — no application needed. All other retailers selling in-scope containers are required to provide a return point (RVM or manual collection). Our team can advise you on your specific obligation at no cost.
England, Scotland and Northern Ireland: PET plastic bottles, aluminium cans and steel cans between 150ml and 3L. Glass is excluded in these nations. Wales includes glass with a 4-year phased exemption (2027–2031) where glass carries a zero deposit initially.
From April 2026, no — for most locations. Permitted Development Rights allow RVM installation without full planning permission: footprint under 80m², height under 4m, not within 15m of residential land, not facing a highway. Exemptions apply in conservation areas and National Parks.
Exchange for Change's proposed £60m fund gives eligible small, independent retailers £6,000 per site — paid as three annual instalments of £2,000, with the first payment approximately three months after scheme launch. This is separate from the handling fee income you earn on every container returned.
Producer registration opens Q3 2026, with a 12-week minimum lead time before launch. Retailer registration follows. Given installation and delivery lead times, the decision on which machine to order should be made now — slots will tighten significantly as 2027 approaches.

Solutions

Built for every stakeholder in the circular economy.

Whether you run a corner shop, a city council or a corporate campus — there's a Retearn solution designed for your obligations, your space and your opportunity.

For Retail & Supermarkets

Accept returns. Earn from them. We handle the rest.

Every container returned to your store earns a handling fee paid by the scheme operator. An automated RVM earns more per return than a manual point, and runs without any staff involvement. We match the right machine to your store format, footfall, and floor plan.

Earn without adding headcount
Automated RVMs process returns without staff involvement. No queues, no training requirements, no additional hours. The machine runs during your trading hours and handles the collection entirely.
Returns drive repeat footfall
Consumers return to stores where redemption is fast and easy. A reliable return point becomes a reason to visit — turning a compliance obligation into a consistent footfall driver.
A machine sized for your store
From a counter-top scanner for a 400 sq ft convenience store to a high-capacity RVM for a supermarket, we size the device to your daily volume and available floor space.

For Municipalities & Councils

More return points across your area means higher return rates across your scheme.

Getting containers back requires making it convenient to return them — at transit hubs, retail parks, and independent shops, not only large supermarkets. Our two-tier approach puts more collection points in more places without proportionally increasing infrastructure cost.

High-throughput machines where footfall demands them
The Reklaim Ace processes more than 1,500 transactions a day at busy stations, leisure centres, and retail parks. Fast processing keeps queues short and consumer participation high.
Portable terminals for every independent shop
Portable Deposit Terminals bring any corner shop or newsagent into your collection network. No floor space requirement, no capital outlay for the retailer, no staff training beyond a single setup session.
Scheme data without chasing each operator
Every device reports in real time. Collections by location, material type, and time period, consolidated into one dashboard for your scheme management and statutory reporting obligations.
For Corporates & Campuses

Give your sustainability programme something auditable to report on.

A DRS collection point on your campus generates a transaction record for every container returned: material type, volume, weight diverted from landfill. Exportable, verifiable, and ready for your next sustainability report without any manual aggregation.

Verified numbers for ESG disclosures
Export containers collected, material breakdown, and CO₂ equivalent by date range, location, or department. Ready for annual reports, internal sustainability targets, or stakeholder presentations.
Fits in a break room
The Reklaim Neo requires less than 5 sq ft. No building work, no dedicated power circuit, no planning requirement. It installs in a canteen, lobby, or corridor and operates from day one.
Employees see their impact in real time
The Retearn app shows each user their cumulative returns, material recovered, and carbon equivalent. Individual actions become visible, which keeps participation going long after the launch week.

Three ways to get your machine. We will tell you which one makes financial sense.

Outright purchase, leasing, or revenue share: the right model depends on your volume, your timeline, and how you prefer to account for the asset. We run the numbers with you honestly and recommend the one that works for your situation.

Model 1
Outright purchase + service contract
You own the machine outright and pay an annual service fee. Best margin for large chains with volume certainty. TOMRA used exactly this model with Dino Polska for 3,000 machines.
Best for: Supermarket chains · Large retail groups
Recommended
Model 2
Leasing or rental
Monthly fee, no upfront cost. Growing fast in the convenience segment. In the UK, the £6,000 Exchange for Change grant combined with 3–5p handling fee income means a small store can essentially cover the machine cost from the scheme itself.
Best for: Independent stores · Convenience segment
Model 3
Revenue share
We provide the machine at low or zero upfront cost and take a portion of the handling fee income you receive. Lowest barrier to entry. Less common in EU DRS markets, but a viable route for operators with uncertain volumes.
Best for: New entrants · Uncertain volume locations
Our edge

Built to adapt. Supported locally.

No two retail environments are the same. We configure every deployment to fit: machine wrap, inlet type, display language, loyalty and POS integration. Our hardware is modular, our support SLA is agreed before you sign, and our team stays reachable long after installation.

Fully customisable hardware
Machine wrap, powder coat, inlet type, and display language configured to your spec. No standard-box compromise.

Part of Recykal

Built to solve what the DRS market was missing.

Retearn is the research and innovation arm of Recykal — India's leading waste management platform. Two live deployments, 6 million containers collected, 11 design rights, 9 patents, and a city-wide DRS in Bhutan running from day one. This is what two years of focused engineering produces.

Built from inside the recycling industry, not outside it.

Retearn didn't begin as a hardware startup with a recycling thesis. It began as a question inside Recykal: why does infrastructure always fail at the point of collection? Recykal had already built India's most connected digital waste ecosystem. The missing piece was physical — machines that could operate at real-world density without constant intervention.

Three years of field data, two live deployments, and a Bhutan city-wide DRS running at 12,000 collections a day later — the answer is the Reklaim range.

Together, both Bhutan sites represent the most complete city-scale DRS deployment in South Asia — designed, built, and operated end-to-end by Retearn.
Why Retearn

Every DRS market has the same problems. We built our machines around solving them.

These are engineering decisions shaped by watching real deployment failures — before we wrote a single line of product code.

The problem
High fixed cost per point means automated RVMs don't work at low volume — excluding most of the network.
Retearn's answer
Two-tier network — full RVMs for high-throughput sites, portable terminals for every small retailer.
The problem
Reactive maintenance means failures are found late. Downtime is unpredictable and erodes consumer habit.
Retearn's answer
Remote health monitoring built in. Issues flagged and scheduled before they become outages.
The problem
Full unit replacements whenever requirements change drive total cost of ownership up sharply over time.
Retearn's answer
Modular architecture. Upgrade the AI module or expand capacity — without replacing the machine.
The problem
Large-format retail bias excludes independent shops and small outlets — the stores serving the most people.
Retearn's answer
Portable terminals let any retailer be a return point — zero capital, zero floor-space requirement.
The problem
Slow recognition and mechanical jams form queues — the single biggest driver of low return rates globally.
Retearn's answer
70 containers/min. AI identification in under 20ms. 1,500+ transactions a day without forming a queue.
The problem
Contaminated returns lower recyclate value across the entire scheme — affecting commercial viability.
Retearn's answer
5-class AI on NVIDIA SOMs. PET, aluminium, glass, MLP, Tetra Packs — classified correctly before storage.
The problem
Weak verification creates fraud risk and reconciliation gaps — especially critical at billions of returns per year.
Retearn's answer
Encrypted telemetry and full audit trails on every transaction. Every container on record, in real time.
The problem
Store-dependent payouts create settlement delays and manual errors that compound as return volumes scale.
Retearn's answer
Digital deposit reimbursement built into the transaction flow. Instant payout — no vouchers, no staff.
